A Simple Guide to Cortisol Saliva Test Instructions

Cortisol hormone test results. Medical laboratory health screening report

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that helps regulate metabolism and stress response. A cortisol saliva test measures the level of cortisol in saliva, which corresponds to the amount of free cortisol circulating in your bloodstream. When collecting a saliva sample for a cortisol test, it is important to follow instructions carefully to get accurate results. Here are the key steps:

Before the Test

  • ✅Do not eat, drink, brush teeth, chew gum or smoke for 30 minutes before collecting the sample. Rinse mouth with water 10 minutes prior.
  • ✅Do not use any steroid inhalers for 24 hours beforehand. Avoid applying steroid creams or lotions like hydrocortisone.
  • ✅Do not collect sample if gums are bleeding.
  • ✅Wash hands thoroughly and allow to dry before collecting sample.

Collecting the Sample

  • 1. Use the collection swab provided by your healthcare provider, such as a Mantacc saliva collection stick.
  • 2. Remove the package and let swab tip fall into mouth without touching it.
  • 3. Keep swab in mouth for 2 full minutes, rolling it around to soak up saliva. Do not chew on swab.
  • 4. Place swab back in a preservation tube and close cap tightly.
  • 5. Label tube with name, date of birth, date and time of collection.
  • 6. Refrigerate sample and return it to the clinic promptly.
  • 7. Collect sample at the exact time specified by your healthcare provider (e.g. 8am, noon, 4pm, 11pm) for accurate results.

Following these instructions carefully will help ensure you collect an optimal saliva sample for cortisol testing. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any additional questions.
