Anterior nares nasal swabs have become a crucial tool in testing for COVID-19. This article will guide you through the process of performing this important procedure.

Preparation:

Before beginning, ensure you have the following materials:

  • ✅Personal protective equipment (PPE): N-95 mask, eye protection, gloves, and gown
  • ✅Viral laboratory collection kit for Anterior Nares Nasal Swab
  • ✅Face mask for the patient (if they don't have their own)
  • ✅Lab requisition form and clinical/consent form
  • ✅Tissues
  • ✅Hand sanitizer or access to a hand washing station
  • ✅Cleaner and paper towels or Oxivir wipes

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. 1. Don your PPE before entering the testing area.
  2. 2. Greet the patient and verify their identity and consent for COVID-19 testing.
  3. 3. Position the patient comfortably and ask them to adjust their mask to expose their nose while keeping their mouth covered.
  4. 4. Instruct the patient to sit on their hands if they feel they might need to move during the procedure.
  5. 5. Remove the sterile swab from its packaging.
  6. 6. Gently insert the swab into one nostril, advancing at least 1 cm (0.5 inch).
  7. 7. Firmly sample the nasal membrane by rotating the swab and leaving it in place for 10 to 15 seconds.
  8. 8. Gently remove the swab and repeat the process in the other nostril using the same swab.
  9. 9. Insert the swab into the tube containing viral transport medium.
  10. 10. Break the swab at the score mark on the shaft so it doesn't protrude above the rim of the container.
  11. 11. Ensure the liquid medium covers the swab tip and securely tighten the cap.
  12. 12. Label the sample with the client's name, date of birth, and date/time of collection.
  13. 13. Place the specimen in the transport container.
  14. 14. Provide the patient with guidance on recommendations while awaiting test results.
  15. 15. Change gloves and perform hand hygiene between patients. If any part of your PPE was touched by the client, change that piece as well.
  16. 16. Follow lab instructions for appropriate storage and shipment of specimens.
  17. 17. Document the testing by completing the clinic/consent form and file it appropriately.

Remember, proper technique and safety precautions are essential for accurate results and protecting both the healthcare worker and the patient. Always follow the most up-to-date guidelines from your local health department when performing anterior nares nasal swabs for COVID-19 testing.
