What We Value

Gastrointestinal infections can be very burdensome to the healthcare system, healthcare workers, and patients:
  1. 1. Over 79 million cases of gastrointestinal infections occur in the U.S. each year, resulting in over 70,000 hospitalizations.
  2. 2. Gastrointestinal infections are associated with over $10 billion in direct healthcare costs annually.
  3. 3. Patients with gastrointestinal infections often require multiple lab tests and procedures to diagnose the pathogen, increasing costs.
  4. 4. Patients with undiagnosed gastrointestinal infections may spread the infection to others.
  5. 5. Timely and accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal pathogens is critical for proper treatment and infection control.
