HPV is responsible for causing over 90% of cases of cervical cancer, as well as a significant number of cases of other types of cancer, including anal, penile, and throat cancer. The laboratory will examine the sample of cells for any abnormalities, including the presence of HPV, which can increase the risk of cervical cancer. If any abnormalities are found, further testing or treatment may be needed. Regular cervical swabs are an important part of preventive care for women, and can help detect potential problems before they become more serious.
